Metastasis

The spread of a malignant disease from one part of the body to another, caused by the movement of malignant cells through the blood or lymphatic system.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent (NSAID)

A type of medication used to treat common aches and pains, and especially pain caused by inflammation. Best used under the direction of a health care provider, as they may thin the blood (increasing risk of bleeding), cause stomach upset and impair kidney function. Available with or without a prescription.

Opioid

A type of medication used to treat moderate to severe pain. Opioids are often started at a low dosage and gradually increased as needed until the pain is relieved or until side effects limit further increases. May be used in combination with other pain medications to improve their effectiveness. Requires a prescription.

Pain

An unpleasant physical and emotional sensation caused when nerves send a message to the brain that there is damage to the body. Pain is experienced differently by different people and can be influenced by many factors, including fatigue, worry, anxiety, depression or sadness.
